Job Summary
The Data & Business Intelligence Analyst works in partnership with the Senior Data & Business Analyst in leading UBC’s finance data and reporting strategy, engaging in the development and implementation of various strategic data-related initiatives and projects for the University.
This role encompasses managing data integration, data security, integrity of metadata and curated data. Additionally, the Data& Business Intelligence Analyst is responsible for recommending methods to capture data and the development and enhancement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), reports and Power BI dashboards. Delivering support through a help desk, executing data analysis, crafting documentation, performing system testing, and leading training sessions also fall within the purview of this role.
Working closely with key business leaders across UBC, the Data & Business Intelligence Analyst’s efforts are fundamental to empowering the VPFO and UBC to make informed strategic, financial and operational decisions. The role is instrumental in promoting financial transparency, enhancing accountability and fostering service transformation in line with UBC’s core mission.
The Data & Business Intelligence Analyst will collaborate with technology and finance professionals, as well as faculty, staff and students across UBC to nurture a culture of data-driven decision-making, aiding departments and teams to elevate data literacy, facilitate data exploration, and propagate the use of business intelligence tools and processes among end-users.
Organizational Status
Reporting to the Business Intelligence Manager, the Data & Business Intelligence Analyst provides vital role in managing the administration of business intelligence solutions. The role may involve collaboration with project teams, potentially requiring indirect reporting to a Project Manager. The Data & BI Analyst will work alongside Sr. Data & Business Intelligence Analysts, data developers, engineers, business analysts, and finance professionals to ensure superior delivery of business intelligence solutions.
The Data & Business Intelligence Analyst will interact with various levels of the university staff, ranging from Senior Academic Officers to Department Heads, necessitating a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
Work Performed
The position takes a support role in ensuring the reliability and high availability of UBC mission critical 7x24 systems including Business Intelligence application monitoring, tier 2 support, problem analysis and resolution, and ensuring services meet or exceed customer service levels at all times.
Mistakes made or neglect of regular ETL & integrity checks by the Data& BI Analyst could lead to misinformed decisions by the university's executives and leadership, potentially affecting the institution's standards and operations. Inaccurate data handling or analysis can result in critical errors, impacting the university’s decision-making process, and might lead to loss of productivity, funding, and revenue.
Supervision Received
The Data & BI Analyst is expected to work with a considerable degree of independence, exercising discretion in methods and procedures while performing their role. The quality of work is measured against the achievement of broad objectives. While the role is autonomous, the Data & BI Analyst is also a collaborative team member, reporting to and receiving general direction from the Business Intelligence Manager. Feedback may also be incorporated from VPFO Directors and senior management.
Supervision Given
This role may involve mentoring or providing informal guidance to less experienced staff at UBC. The Data & BI Analyst might also participate in peer reviews and contribute feedback on the team's performance to the Business Intelligence Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. In-depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them. Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field is preferred.
An understanding of data modelling, data warehouse design and relational databases with familiarity of Entity-relationship diagrams and ETL processes.
Experience with data loading, security, and ensuring data integrity.
Proficient in BI and reporting tools, particularly Power BI and OLAP technologies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills.

Work Performed
- Responsible for leading university wide projects associated with finance BI reporting
- Design, builds and oversees BI reports and dashboards, within BI application and Power BI, to translate data into actionable insights for university consumption
- Utilizing subject matter expertise to resolve complex issues, performing related prototyping, report enhancements and changes, and providing future mitigation recommendations to leadership.
- Writes, maintains and supports SQL query and ETL scripts to execute data loading processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness between different IT applications;
- Analyses the impacts of data model changes, resolve any technical issues arise that may impact the business intelligence application including but not limited to SQL tables, data models, reports and dashboards
- Develops and manages the enhancement of methodologies, standards, procedures, processes, policies related to the improvement and/or maintenance of BI reporting quality
- Provides strategic security and access administration oversight, expertise and support for enterprise wide Business Intelligence application; create and maintain governance documentation and education pertains to the access provisioning and security standards.
- Designs, developments and implements enhancements to existing BI application and reports to support seamless integration across different application systems, UDaPand data warehouse
- Manage the help desk in providing technical expertise, training and consultation to other UBC staff. Resolves highly complex Tier 2 & 3 Service Centre tickets through face-to-face interactions, phone and email/ticketing system, and engaging the product vendor for technical support when necessary.
- Manages and provides technical subject matter expertise and advice through every phase of the data integration and reporting life cycle in support of ongoing updates and evolution of the business intelligence application for UBC.
- Manage and develop comprehensive, up-to-date technical documentation for BI systems and processes for the internal knowledge inventory and overall customer service material development
- Responsible for designing and conducting BI application and process integration testing to ensure functionality and performance standards
- Design and deliver training programs for BI tools and data analysis techniques to staff at UBC
- Lead the design, development, testing and tracking of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the VPFO departments and UBC wide finance initiatives
- Maintains the IRP and Planon Benefits Realization Management (BRM) implementation plan, working with process owners in defining functional and business requirements, system features, performance requirements to ensure UBC is fully capitalizing the benefits of the systems
- Responsible for improve appropriate BRM tools, templates, standards and processes to identify, maintain and sustain benefits as needed and making recommendations for improvements as needed to functional area owners
- Lead the supplier data and information collection processes for the UniForum program, including ensuring data accuracy, and continuous improvement of the data collection process. Acts as the interdepartmental interface for the UniForum project team and other units on campus
- Partners with UBC IT to support the definition of business needs, processes, and interdependencies in which guide the BI report administration.
- Documents functions and changes to new or modified modules, tests activities/results, error handling and backup/recovery procedures.
- Provides ongoing maintenance and operational support for applications.
- Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
- Performs other related duties as required.
